Samhain: Embrace the Magic of the Witch's New Year

Discover the ancient traditions, rituals, and celebrations of Samhain at Wise Ash Witch. Learn how to honor the Witch's New Year with spells, altars, and more.

What is Samhain?

Samhain, pronounced "sow-in," is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Celebrated from October 31st to November 1st, it is considered the Witch's New Year, a time when the veil between the living and the dead is thinnest. This makes it an ideal time for divination, honoring ancestors, and connecting with the spirit world.

  • Bonfires: Light a bonfire to symbolize the sun's warmth and to ward off evil spirits.

  • Feasting: Share a meal with family and friends, setting a place for departed loved ones.

Setting Up Your Samhain Altar

Creating a Samhain altar is a beautiful way to honor the season. Here’s how to set up your own:

  • Altar Cloth: Choose a black or orange cloth to represent the season.

  • Candles: Use black, orange, and white candles for protection, strength, and purity.

  • Crystals: Incorporate stones like obsidian, onyx, and smoky quartz.

  • Symbols of the Season: Include pumpkins, apples, and autumn leaves.

  • Photos and Mementos: Add pictures and keepsakes of your ancestors.

Samhain is a powerful time for magic, as the boundary between our world and the spirit realm is at its thinnest. This makes it an ideal period for spells that protect, prosper, and connect with the other side. Here are some detailed spells you can perform during Samhain:
